Comics

Now, is it not true that Garth Ennis is the greatest fucking writer ever?  Read Preacher, or any of the new Punisher issues.  I'm all giddy.

Re: Comics

Preacher is alright, and Garth Ennis is a fun writer, but there are a lot better people writing comics out there.... I think Ennis is like a really good Wes Craven or John Carpenter of comic book writing, whilst you're missing the Kubricks and, uh, other fantastic movie makers of comics.

That's a pretty bad and twisty analogy.

Preacher is a lot of fun though, I read like the first 25 or so issues, have a lot more somewhere in graphic novel (tpb) form but haven't gotten around to reading them yet.

Re: Comics

Finishing Preacher was one of the coolest comic experiences I've ever had. The ending (don't worry, not giving anything away) was really satisfying.

Come to think of it, not many comics have a real beginning and end without getting bogged down. Off the top of my head I can only think of Bone, Sandman, and Scud. The Tick felt like it was just getting started when it ended, and then a bunch of people who weren't Ben Edlund took over. Bleh.

I talked about Stray Bullets on today's front page, but if I can recommend another book, it's Madman. The Superman/Madman Hullabaloo is one of the coolest crossovers ever, and it's readily available in TPB. If you dig that, you'll love the normal Madman series.

What about stuff like "Watchmen"? You read that?

I'm gonna have to re-start Preacher, I have most of the books but never got past the first 25 / 30 or so. I also have never read a Sandman comic; I have seen them in shops, but have never seen the first issues or collections, only like "book 6" and "Mystery Theatre" etc. Is it good? Worth checking out?

100 Bullets was mentioned very briefly (getting an unfavourable comparison to Stary Bullets, that I hadn't previously heard of) in todays update. I'm currently reading through the 100 Bullets series from the beginning; they're enjoyable but not as good as i've heard them hyped. I'm on about issue - is there going to be a full plot anytime soon, or is it all complete self-contained stories with only the recurring character of Agent Graves, anyone know?

Oh, another set of comics to check out for sure are the various SIN CITY series' by Frank Miller. Fuckin' awesome, currently being adapted for a movie. EDIT: Which is where the super cool quote comes from in my signature, by the way.

Re: Comics

Oh yeah, I forgot about Watchmen, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Maus too. As you said, 100 Bullets isn't really bad, it's just overhyped. When you're reading something really magical like Sin City, you're almost elated and carried away by the book. 100 Bullets and Powers (one of Bendis' books) just strike me as having interesting concepts, but not told in a really masterful way. In all honesty, the only thing that stands out to me in both books is the dialogue.

I've read through about 25 or so issues of 100 Bullets, and a more cohesive plot does start to develop around Graves.

Re: Comics

In the beginning I though the same thing as you did about 100 bullets but I can honestly say now that 100 bullets is my favourite comic book, and it does develop a full story as the smaller story arcs progress. As you get further and further into the series you begin to see the precision in the actions of Agent Graves, and the book gets a lot more intresting as old characters begin to be reintroduced. I've read all 52 issues, believe me it's worth it.

EDIT: I've really been meaning to pick up Watchmen, for like 6 months I've seen it on the shelf and everyone says it's the best novel out there, but for some reason I never do. Right now I'm reading all the old issues of witchblade I neglected to read when I bought them (which is like issues 25-present). I've only read Sandman: preludes and Noctures, it was a good story but I likes Death: the high cost of living better when it comes to Niel Gaiman's stuff.  Another favourite of mine is Y: the last man, The art isn't spectaculer or anything, but the stories are realy good.

That about covers it, that was a big edit.

Re: Comics

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is good; I really liked the first volume, then I read the second one recently and whilst I still enjoyed reading it, found it to be a whole lot crazier than I remembered the first being (for example:
Mr Hyde raping the invisible man, Mr Hyde touching Miss Murray's breast before sacrificing himself
. I'm a big fan of Alan Moore, what i've read of his anyway. elpollodiablo, definately check out Watchmen.

I have seen Maus in the shops, but it didn't look that interesting; but i've recently heard it praised quite a bit. What's it about? Is it that good?

I'm going to continue reading through the back issues of 100 Bullets. It's not that I don't enjoy them, but it just doesn't "rock my world." And frankly, my world deserves to be rocked.

Oh yeah, elpollodiablo, you mentioned Y: The Last Man. I've read the first 3 tpb's of that and it's great, isn't it? Presumably at some point it will have a definate "ending", which hopefully will not be a let down.

On a slightly different note, any of you been reading Identity Crisis, the big crossover thing currently ongoing in the DCU? What do you think? I'm enjoying it so far, though (spoilers)
having Plastic Man's wife raped then later killed whilst pregnant
was a little shocking. Enjoyable so far though.

Definitely.  The latter half of the series is when Ennis's work shines the brightest.  Make sure you also check out the special issue about Starr, "One Man's War."

The new Punishers are in my opinion, the best ever written.  The current story arc is fucking magnificent.

Re: Comics

Hmm, in no real order.... Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Jeph Loeb.. they've all done some hit and miss stuff, but they've all done some really fantastic works as well. Some of the old, less well known stuff by the first two is good as well (Alan Moore stuff like V for Vendetta, Frank Miller stuff like Ronin and 300).

Oh, and Grant Morrison. I haven't read much by him, but what i've read is brilliant - Arkham Asylum is good, but even better is his original run on this old series called "Animal Man" from the 80's. I found the tpb's of that run in my local library... it starts off as a fairly typical book, but without ruining it, turns into probably the most original and most mind-fucking comic series i've ever read. I really want to read some of his other works.

EDIT: Some comics I want to read include Ennis' run on Punisher and Road To Perdition, what about you, some comics you haven't read but want to?

Just so you know, his current work on the "MAX" series is the best yet.

There are some classics that I have yet to read, due to the fact that I have no idea where I should start.  These include "Sin City", "100 Bullets", and a few others.

Definately check out the original Sin City series ASAP... then I think the order to get the next ones is A DAME TO KILL FOR then THE BIG FAT KILL then THAT YELLOW BASTARD. I believe you can read them out of sync, but it makes more sense if you read them that way (and you get some fun little cameo's if you do it like that). My favourites are the original SIN CITY and THAT YELLOW BASTARD. I haven't read HELL & BACK or any of the other big stories published since, though I have read some of the small one shots and stuff.

SIN CITY should be required reading in schools.

With 100 Bullets, you have to start from the beginning (about a year ago I got TPB#6 or something like that from a library, and was completely dumbfounded by what the fuck was going on. I gave up halfway through that book, but have enjoyed it more since starting from the beginning.

The only book I've read out of order, and I mean COMPLETELY out of order, and still gotten the jist of the story is The Darkness, the only problem I have with it is that Top Cow is always changing the writer for it, if I recall I think that originaly it was written by Ennis too.

The currenty story arc is one of the most amazing I've read.  I love Steven Grant, and Mike Zeck, and all the guys from the old Punisher crew, but Garth Ennis has made the absolute best of him.

Re: Comics

Bendis, Warren Ellis, Pererson & Puckett (batgirl), Eninis, Morrison

Bendis and Ellis are, hands down, the best writers in comics today.  Ennis is good, and Preacher and The Pro are some of my favorite comics, but I'd still pick Ellis or Bendis.  Powers, and Planetary are probably the best comics out right now.
Morrison's a little to trippy at times for my tastes.  The Invisibles was great, but had too many weird hippie/psychic undertones.
Peterson & Puckett got in before Ennis because of the new Batgirl comics.  I know it sounds gay, but it's a really good series, and it actually made me want to wade through the overwhelming sea of crap that is the history of the Gotham universe for some context.

Ennis is pretty good, but overrated (at least by you guys).

P.S. - By complete coincidence, this is the only time I've ever even looked in this part of the forums

I agree that Ennis is good but over-rated. I've just started reading "Welcome Back, Frank", the first run in his Punisher series. In my opinion, it's very enjoyable, but i'm still to be blown away by his writing... but it's a comic book, it doesn't need to be more than "very enjoyable"!

Have you read Animal Man by Morrison? That's one of my favourite series ever, just because I guess my expectations were so low (Animal-Man? Pshh), but he managed to make it so insanely trippy. I tried reading The Invisibles, but I started about half way through so never got into it. I haven't really read anything else by him, aside from "Arkham Asylum" (which is great, but mostly because of the art), I want to read more of his works.

Did Warren Ellis do Global Frequency? I've read the first trade of that, enjoyed it a lot. The only "Planetary" I've read is the crossovers with the DCU (Batman, Superman, and the JLA), which were fun. I've not read any of the stand alone / non-crossover stories.

What did Bendis do? I know the name but can't think of any of his books.

Oh, welcome to LIA, Garnth.

1. Yes he did, he also did "Transmetropolitan" (possibly the greatest series ever), Some of "The Authority", and "Ministry of Space" to mention a few.

2. Besides Powers?  Bendis mostlly like to write crime drama like "Torso" and "Jinx", but he also works for marvel doing "Ultimate Spiderman", "Daredevil", and "Alias". I think he wrote a few issues of Spawn too.  But all that doesn't matter because "Powers" alone makes him the greatest writer ever.

3. I've been on theses forums literaly since they were created, I've just never posted inside the LIA section because I don't read the strip.

P.S. - Remembered that Ennis wrote "Hitman", or at least part of it.  That makes him quite a lot cooler in my opinion, since that and the new "Batgirl" are the only straight DC comics (not wildstorm, dark horse etc...) that I enjoyed.

Gaiman would be one of my favorites even if he had only written the books Good Omens, American Gods, and Coraline. I really dig everything I read by him, like Sandman, Stardust, and the really odd large-format stuff he does with McKean.

Not only that, but I saw an interview with him on the old Screen Savers, and he was an incredibly nice and intelligent guy that seemed as though he'd be fun to hang around with. Most of the time when I see a writer interviewed on tv, he seems to replace most of his vocabulary with "umm" and/or acts put off, as though the interview is beneath him.

The filth was good, but it seemed like he just didn't know what he wanted to do with the series, like what the fuck was the whole thing where the main character falls and his hand is really the base?  His story make my fucking head hurt sometimes.  The Invisibles was great though.

I just finished up the first 5 issues of Astonishing X-men. John Cassidy did a damn fine job on the pencils which is not suprizing when you consider his work on Planetary. But the writing was blah... Disappointing because they promised us a more superhero like team with less Mutant Agenda bullshit. First story? Someone has discovered a cure for the mutant gene and teh X-men must figure out what to do for teh good of mankind and mutants.

Same sad sorry shit that marvel has been feeding us with the X-books for years now, other than the fact that Cyclops is fucking the White Queen instead of Jean Grey. When will they do something different ? I'm sticking to DC and Wildstorm.

I haven't, sorry elpollo.

In comic book news: I have recently read 100Bullets up to issue 50, and am fucking LOVING IT (even though I initially hated the series). Absolutely great stuff.

They're making Alan Moore's "V For Vendetta" into a movie. What the fuck? It's going about a terrorist who bombs buildings and stuff as a "hero" in 80's England. It's a  great book, but won't work as a movie.

Still really enjoying "Y: The Last Man".

WE3 by Grant Morrison is looking good. I dug the first issue a lot, but haven't been able to track down the others yet, not sure if they're out of not.

Re: Comics

Anyone here like Alien, Predator, or AvP comics? I used to like them when I was like 14, and still have a bunch in my closet. I have this one where predators hunt civil war guys. :-O

Though technically it’s not a comic, but a novella featuring artwork every couple of pages or so, I really enjoyed Aliens: Tribes.

It's called metal, General.

You have phenomenal taste, gentleman.

Also, regarding Kepp: I can never refuse you.

Tempest, I have GL: Rebirth, have flicked through it but not yet read it, looks a piece of shit, actually. Any good? I will read it when I get time. I also am interested in reading JLA: Elite (that's Grant Morrison written, right?), being a huge Morrison geek. Let me know how it is.

Currently, am reading a really nice Vertigo comic, a hardcover trade is what I have of it, which I think is called "is it a bird" or something, which is a semi-autobiographical work about a comic book writer (the writer of the story) who is asked to write a Superman comic for DC, and it is basically the story of his life, as he tries to think of a Superman story. Pretty interesting and unique stuff, though i've only read the first few pages.

edit: re-read this thread from the beginning: elpollo, did you ever finish Watchmen? What did you think?

Neil Gaiman has been mentioned, I'm about a third of the way through "Stardust" by him, it's alright, but i'm not enjoying it all that much actually. I've read some of his big stuff with Dave McKean, and that's awesome. I want to read "Good Omens", which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett (whom I love, anyone read any of his Discworld books?).

I really want to read "The Invisibles". I think that's going to be on my Christmas list.

I read Maus, which was discussed before, and really enjoyed reading it. Shows that comic books can be more than the publics perception of them...

I also read all the parts of "Wanted" by Mark Millar up until like number 5, which ends on a cliff hanger... anyone read that? It's pretty great stuff, about a... well, sort of about a world where the supervillains won, and now run things, and the "hero" is a supervillain (not some pussy who realises the error of his ways, either, he goes around raping and killing for fun and shit). I'd recommend that, though I hear the last part (or next part) isn't out until January or something, which pisses me off...

OK, I know the topic is kinda dead and I know this is a double post, but I just wanted to ask if anyone knows anything about Micheal J. Strajenski's (sp?) Midnight Nation, supposedly his "magnum opus" or whatever. Any opinions on it from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, you mean

this?

great series.  Kinda strange and it follows the ever so popular form of the main character never understanding what the fuck is going on, but very solid.

Essentially, Leiutenant Grey is a cop investigating a murder when some wacky shit happens and he end's up going on a weird cross-country hike.  But there are monsters and such too.  The whole thing is very symbolic, and probably relates to the bible, but damned if i know how.

A++ Good read, would recomend again.

and On a related note, has anyone ever seen all of Babylon 5?  I never know what the fuck is going on in that show.  Straczynski should stick to comics.

1. No, never heard of terry pratchet before...

*note: that's every discworld novel sitting on it's own shelf in my room.  Thank BonzoESC's shitty camera phone for the lack of quality.

2. The Invisibles is probably Morrison's best work, good choice.

3. Damn jew.  Actually I went to a comic convention where Art Spiegelman (the writer) spoke.  it was neat.  I read Maus but never bought it, and recommended it to a few friends.

4. HOT
